Friends

Sometimes moving will show you who your real friends are!

Summer Is In Full Swing

We aren't all work and no play. We love spending time at the local beaches and sometimes even hit up the Ocean City, MD tourist spots! In fact, George and Barb are out at Seacrets right now. If you see them be sure to say hi AND if you mention "Airport Self Storage Blog" they'll even buy you a drink!

Ava & Andrew

Ava & Andrew are two extraordinary local kids that have touched our hearts. Both are living life fully with cerebral palsy and compete regularly in road races and sprint triathlons.

We encourage you to check out their story and support them as they represent the US this summer in the 19th International RaceRunner Training Camp and Cup in Denmark, which will include athletes from more than a dozen countries.

Assateague's Newest Pony

Warning: This is not even remotely related to self storage, moving or packing (it's way more fun).

If you're local to Salisbury, Berlin or Ocean City then you are probably aware of the filly that was born on Assateague Island in May. You're also probably aware that she's been pretty elusive. Well, we saw her yesterday and she's precious! We're stoked & just had to share the pictures.

OC Airshow making history: GIRL Power!

The air show in OC is this weekend and we're sending a big shout out to Capt. Katie Higgins as she makes history! Woohoo! Girl power!!!

The air show says the first female to ever fly with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels will be at the air show. Marine Capt. Katie Higgins is a third generation military aviator. She is originally from Severna Park, Md. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, went to Georgetown University for a Masters in International Security, and then started flight school training in Pensacola, Fla. She is one of three Blue Angel pilots who fly the C-130 Hercules, known as “Fat Albert.” Higgins will take the controls during the Ocean City show.

We can't wait to see her in action!

Moving Hacks

Found these handy little tidbits in the June 2015 edition of This Old House magazine.

Throwback Thursday

Throw Back Thursday! We aren't just named Airport Self Storage because we happen to be located close to the airport. It's also because George has been a pilot since the 1970's. Here's a picture of the oldest and youngest members of our crew from about 15 years ago. That day when George turned on the carburetor heater mid-flight & the plane started to run a little rough (as is usual) little Jarrin with no worry at all in his voice asks "Pap are we out of gas?"

Simple Storage Tip #2

When it comes time to move into your new place, be sure to put sheets on the beds when you first arrive. Chances are high you won't want to do it once you're tired and ready to sleep.

Boat Storage

When you aren't out on your boat do you really want it taking up space in your driveway or yard? Airport Self Storage will happily store that boat for just $42 a month. The parking spaces are safe and secure within our gated, fully fenced facility here on the edge of Salisbury, MD. And all parking and self storage leases are month to month so there's no long term obligation.

Considerations For A Summer Move

Be aware of what should not be put into the moving truck.

Candles in a moving truck driving through the desert in the summer will melt all over your other stuff; carry them with you instead. Leather upholstered furniture will “sweat” if wrapped in plastic; use a pad instead. Things like stamp collections and expensive artwork should travel in your air conditioned vehicle too. It's always a good idea to keep vital documents with you so they aren't lost in the sea of boxes should you need to produce them in a hurry. Planning ahead to keep vulnerable items out of the heat will keep them intact. These are all also things that should go into climate control storage units rather than standard storage.

Be kind to the movers - they’re hot too.

Have cold water available for the packing crew. Respect their needs to take reasonable breaks, especially if it’s uncomfortably hot. Ordering pizzas or providing subs is a nice gesture of goodwill that goes a long way.

Think about air conditioning at both ends of the move.

The doors to your home will be open for extended periods of time and the temperature inside will reflect the temperature outside. Prepare accordingly, remembering that you will literally pay the price if your air conditioners run for hours on end. Keep ceiling fans running and windows open if you opt to forgo the a/c. Also, be sure that the electricity is turned on in the new home because it's going to be hot there too.

Plan for pets and kids.

Make arrangements for your pets and kids. Work out a way to keep them away from the movers. It's best to have a friend or family member take care of them offsite. The movers will need full access to the house and the easier it is for them to move about the quicker the process will go.

Simple Storage Tip #1

Use red duct tape to easily locate boxes that will need to be placed in the front of the storage unit. Items inside these boxes would include stuff you may need to access while in storage. Then, choose a different color or print for each room and group them together while packing the self-storage unit. This will be a huge help when it ultimately comes time to move the boxes into your new place.
