Many people can experience feelings of anxiety or depression during the holiday season. People who already live with a mental health condition should take extra care to tend to their overall health and wellness during this time. Extra stress, unrealistic expectations or even sentimental memories that accompany the season can be a catalyst for the holiday blues. Some can be at risk for feelings of loneliness, sadness, fatigue, tension and a sense of loss. A lot of seasonal factors can trigger the holiday blues such as, less sunlight, changes in your diet or routine, alcohol at parties, over-commercialization or the inability to be with friends or family. These are all factors that can seriously affect your mood.
However, there are certain things you can do to help avoid the holiday blues. Ken Duckworth, M.D., NAMI’s medical director, shares advice for managing your health—both mental and physical—during the holiday season in the video below.

Lots of things change around the holidays, our schedules, our home decorations, and all sorts of new and exciting foods are laying all over the counters and on tables. It’s good to take a moment and think about what we can do to prevent any accidents that could jeopardize the safety of our dogs this holiday season because nobody wants to spend the holiday in an animal emergency center.
You read that right. 1000 house fires are started every year by pets so be careful with those menorahs and holiday candles. Be sure they are placed in a safe location out of the reach of any pets.
Most of our dogs have full run of the house, which means they get into everything, and the Christmas tree can be full of potentially deadly dangers. A fake tree is better for homes with dogs, but if you are going to have a real tree, take extra precautions. Make sure it is well-watered so that the pine needles do not dry out and fall off. If your tree gets dry and the needles fall off, the sharp needles can puncture the internal organs of dogs if they are ingested. They are also poisonous.
Also keep an eye on the water at the base of your live tree. It could contain fertilizers that seep out of the tree, and it can also go stagnant and become a breeding ground for bacteria that could make your pup ill if they drink it.
Make sure that your tree is firmly grounded so that it won’t be easily knocked over by an excited pup with a wagging tail.
Be sure your decorations are secured to the tree so they won’t fall off. Ornaments look a lot like toys to dogs and you don’t want broken glass ingested or stuck in your dogs feet.
Holly can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems.
Artificial versions of both of these plants are going to be a much safer option if you have dogs in your home.
Hopefully by now you are aware of the toxicity of chocolate and xylitol for all pets. Make sure to keep your pup away from food tables and unattended plates. Watch those cocktails, too. If your dog gets a hold of a cocktail, they could become weak, ill, and may even go into a coma, possibly resulting in death from respiratory failure. Cocktails are no laughing matter when it comes to our furry family members.
Make sure all guests know that you have a dog, and let them know what the rules are ahead of time to avoid problems later. It’s important that people know to keep doors shut so your dog doesn’t get out. Let them know that feeding your pup table scraps is against the rules. Be sure that children are supervised, and let them know if your dog likes attention or would prefer to be left alone. You may just want to designate a quiet room for your dog when having company to keep everyone safe, secure and happy.

What are the rules of the auction?
All bidders are required to sign in at the office before bidding begins, so make sure you arrive a few minutes early. We will need to see your drivers license for personal identification and then you will be issued a bidding number. No deposit is required but you must register if you want to bid. Once registration is complete, you will walk to each unit that is for sale. While it's only a short distance you'll probably want to wear comfortable shoes (heels don't work well on our stone roadways). You will be allowed to look into each unit, but are not allowed to enter. You may want to bring a flashlight to help see into the back. We have bidders view the unit from the outside in order to expedite the auction and to prevent removal of items. At the conclusion of the auction any units you have won will need to be paid for in CASH ONLY at the office immediately. You then have 24 hours to empty the unit and sweep it clean with a broom.
Do storage facility employees go through the units?
In the state of Maryland, prior to an auction, storage facility owners & employees are legally allowed to remove the lock and take a brief inventory of the contents of the units up for auction. While we are legally allowed in the unit to do so, we typically take that inventory from outside the unit. Certain items (vehicles, firearms, questionably hazardous or illegal materials) have different requirements that may compel us to enter the unit and collect additional information. Generally speaking, we do our best to leave the units in the same condition we found them in.
How often are storage auctions held?
Unlike many other facilities, we do not frequently hold auctions. We do our best to work with delinquent customers and structure payment plans rather than resorting to auction. Unfortunately though, there are times when we are left with no other choice. The legal process requires an account to be 60 days past due (although we have never auctioned a unit that early) and customers may bring their account up to date at any time until the auction is complete thus removing their unit from the auction pool. For this reason, the number of units in the auction can vary drastically from the time of advertising to the actual time of the auction. You can expect us to typically have 10 to 20 units up for sale.
Ever wonder why self storage facilities have auctions instead donating the stuff to a local shelter, selling it on Craigslist or taking it to the dump? The truth is, having a storage auction is our ONLY LEGAL OPTION for clearing a unit that has defaulted or been abandoned. That's right, we are literally left with no other choices and there are a very strict set of legal rules to follow. While the law allows us to auction a unit after 60 days of non-payment, throughout our 30 years in the business of storage we have never once done so that soon. Only after making every effort to contact & settle up with the default customer do we proceed.
Having an auction is not something we ever feel good about and contrary to what's implied on the tv shows, we don't make a boatload of money. In fact, we have never broken even as far as auction income vs. outstanding debt owed to us. Aside from recouping some lost revenue, our other (and probably more important) goal is to make units available for potential paying customers. This benefits us and the community - so when you come to rent a unit you get the size you need rather than having to take what's available.
